Margin scheme VAT and pre-owned phones: a plain-English guide

Why some phones show marginal VAT and others standard VAT, and what it means for your invoice.

By SBK Wholesale ยท 2 November 2026

Two kinds of price

Some pre-owned stock is sold under the VAT margin scheme and some is standard-rated. On our pre-owned pages each phone is labelled either marginal VAT or standard VAT, so you can see how it is treated before you buy.

Standard VAT

Standard-rated goods show VAT on the invoice at 20 percent, and a VAT-registered buyer can normally reclaim it. Delivery is also charged with VAT.

Marginal VAT

Under the margin scheme, VAT is accounted for on the seller's margin rather than shown on the invoice, so there is no separate VAT line for you to reclaim. Marginal VAT items are priced the same ex VAT and inc VAT in the shop.

Check with your accountant

This is a general guide, not tax advice. Your accountant can confirm how to record each kind of purchase.
