The short version
Older iPhones such as the iPhone 11 to 13 have a back glass bonded to the frame, which is why shops use a laser machine. From the iPhone 15 onwards, iFixit's guides for the 15, 16, 17 and 18 Pro Max release the back glass from the rear with heat and a pick, and the display stays in place.
What the job looks like
- Remove the two pentalobe screws
- Heat the bottom edge and open a gap with a suction handle
- Slice the adhesive edge by edge, never deeper than about 3 mm
- Open the glass like a book and disconnect the wireless charging connector
- Clean the frame, fit new adhesive and the new glass
iFixit rates these Moderate, at around 45 minutes to two hours.
Tell customers about water resistance
The factory seal is replaced by new adhesive, which restores a lot of protection but not the original rating. Say so at the counter so nobody is surprised.
